Visualization of Crimes in the USA
Finally getting the hang of using D3.js (v4)
The dataset used for creating these visualizations is the FBI Crime dataset obtainable here at point number 2.
The visualization is available here. The line chart and small multiples bar chart was done by me, while the map and sankey in the second visualization was done by Lee Bing Yuan.
The purpose of the line chart was to show the trend of crimes from 1994 to 2013 and to allow users to compare the trend between different crime categories by clicking on the legend. The small multiples bar chart were plotted to show the users the Year over Year growth for each category over the past 20 years. An obvious problem with small multiples are that sometimes, it is just too small. Therefore, users are allowed to click the title of the small multiples to enable a larger version of the bar chart to pop up.
